BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS

by Neil Simon

Just in case you missed the recent Launch Evening but are interested in auditioning for the October production, here are a few details about the characters in “BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS”.

The play is set in New York, and the characters are second generation Jewish, but do not speak in Jewish accents. They are a warm, caring family. APPEARANCE is what counts – so if you can act the age of the characters, then please come and audition.

EUGENE aged nearly 15. He is the narrator and central character. His interests lie in baseball and girls, and he comments, at great length, on his family. He has plenty of great comedy lines. This is a marvellous part.

STANLEY aged 18. He is Eugene’s brother, and they have a good relationship with plenty of comic and serious banter. He has a full-time job and we see his caring attitude as the play develops.

LAURIE aged 13. She is aged 13, and is the boys’ cousin. Although she is not a very fit girl, she does rather play on this, and gets out of doing much to help in the home. She certainly takes everything in and has some lovely ‘put-down’ lines.

NORA aged 16. A bright, bubbly teenager sister of Laurie. We see her full of enthusiasm and excitement at one time, and also when she is reminiscing about her sadness at losing her father. This is a really lovely part.

KATE is the boys’ mother and she is quite a formidable character, as she runs this family home. She is in her 40s and always has an answer for everything.

BLANCHE is Kate’s sister and the girls’ mother. She is asthmatic. She was widowed two years earlier, and she relies initially on her sister and brother-in-law for decisions that affect her family. She is in her late 30s – early 40s.

JACK is Kate’s Husband. He is in his 40s, but works a full-time and part-time job and is rather unfit. He is very much the respected head of the family; he offers advice based on his experiences, and shows concern at the state of the economic situation in the USA, and the rise of Fascism in Europe.
